House Type

1,699 square foot, 2-story house with unfinished basement.

Ceiling

Foundation Walls

R-15 Insulation full 8' height on foundation wall. Or, R-19 insulation on unfinished basement ceiling.

Windows

Greater than R-2.5 overall, such as dbl pane vinyl with "low E" coating.

Air Leakage

Less than .34 natural air changes per hour as verified by a blower door test; fully weatherstripped; completely caulked joints and cracks; sealed attic bypasses (i.e., wiring and plumbing penetrations, attic hatch and area around chimneys all airtight); dampers on all vents; and outside combustion air ducted in for space- and water-heating appliances, fireplaces, and wood burning stoves.

House Ventilation

Heat-recovery ventilation (HVR).

Solar Gain

At least 50 square feet of south-facing windows that are unshaded in winter, preferably with mass for heat storage.

Water Heater

Insulated with additional R-5 or greater; low-flow (2.5 gpm or less) showerheads and faucets; and first 10 feet of hot and cold water pipes off tank insulated with closed-cell foam.

Space Heating

87% AFUE "sealed combustion" or "power-vented" low-mass(less than 4 gal. boiler water content) boiler, or a "sealed-combustion" gas furnace with an AFUE of 90% or higher, or an efficient electrical ground source heat pump.

Distribution

Furnace ducts in unheated basement sealed with mastic and insulated to R-6.

Lighting

80% hard-wired fluorescent lighting fixtures in high use areas.

Automatic set-back thermostat on each heating zone: zoning in houses with boiler system.

Energy efficient refrigerator.
